The beleaguered Adarsh building saw nearly 200 slum dwellers and members of Ghar Bachao Andolan led by activists Medha Patkar yesterday on 8th of February. Sources have reported that they forcibly entered inside the 31 storey building located in Colaba.
A per report of the sources, the protesters clearly mentioned their planning that they would not stop until the government orders the demolition of building and scrap the Rule 3K under the Maharashtra slum Act.
Most of the protesters were residents of Ganesh Krupa Society in the Golibar area of Santacruz (East) where the government is taking strict steps to demolish the slums since the 20th of January so as to redevelop the project under the SRA scheme.
While speaking to media, Medha Patkar said that on one hand the slums are demolished by the state government which is rendering many people homeless but on the other hand the government constructed a building which is violating the rules. She further cleared her intentions of staying there until they were given justice.
Source present at the spot told that the ruckus began at around 4:30 PM in the evening. Shouting slogans, the protestors soon tore down the asbestos sheets leading to the society office on the first floor. However, they were prevented to move to the higher floors.
This barging into the premises of Adarsh building even led to the arrest of activist Patekar and nearly 50 other protesters for some time as told by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone I, Cherring Dorje.
