After Blackberry, government tightens its control over Skype and Google

Government on Wednesday announced that along with Blackberry, Skype, Google and other communication services will be required to install their servers in India to allow the security forces to intercept Internet data.

Government has apprised all the communication providers to install their servers in India through a formal notice so as to avert any possibility of allowing the exchange of terrorist messages.

The chief bureaucrat in the Home Ministry, Mr G K Pillai told to media in a news conference that all the people who operate communication services in India should have a server in India to aid in the monitoring of the encrypted data.

He also told that just as the research in Motion (RIM), BlackBerry manufacturer, agreed to install its server in India other companies should also do the same.

Some of the companies like giant Nokia said earlier in this week to the government that it was planning for the installation of the server in the country to help it with ensuring security to the government from the terrorists and insurgents who can plan attack over these networks.

With the usage powerful encryption technology by the Skype, the Internet phone service, and Google email service, government has shown concern over security and have persuaded the government to enlist them in the firing line.
