Ministry of Human & Research Development has announced today to provide 5% reservation for the economically backward students in technical colleges approved by AICTE. The decision came after the revision of AICTE norms.
The announcement has been made by Mr Kapil Sibal, the HRD Minister. Mr Kapil Sibal said that till now, the tuition fee waiver scheme had been operated by AICTE which allowed providing up to 10% extra seats that were given to economically unprivileged students.
Mr. Sibal further added that it was a freedom to institutes to decide on the part of institutes to apply for such a scheme but now according to the new norm it was mandatory for every technical institute up to five percent.
While announcing the revised AICTE norms Mr Sibal said that the technical institutes from now on could increase 40-50 intake capacity per programme.
Mr. Sibal further said that companies were welcome to set up new technical institutes if they were ready to register the entity as a non profitable entity under the section 25 of Company’s Act to run such institutes. While substantiating the norm he informed that no joint venture was, however, applicable according to the norm and the scheme would only be allowed in 241-districts across the country where at present no AICTE institute existed.
Along with the reservation Mr Sibal also announced to increase 200,000 additional seats in engineering course in India.
