A stike has been called on Monday in Andhra Pradesh by the TDP or Telegu Desam Party. The bandh was called to protest against the denial of permission to its leaders to visit the Babli project on Godavari River which the party says will deprive Andhra farmers of water. The Maharashtra government denied the permission.
The Maharashtra police arrested Telegu Desam Party president, Chandra Babu Naidu and 74 legislators and sent to judicial custody for two days. Naidu was arrested on Friday at Maharashtra’s Nanded district when they entered the state despite prohibitory orders which were issued by the government.
TDP MP Nama Nageswar Rao said,” “We have given a call for hartal (strike). They (Maharashtra government) should allow us to visit Babli and 13 other projects along with the media”. He told that they will not seek any bail as they have not done anything wrong. He also told that they wanted to see the Bali project before the meeting with PM Manmohan Singh on July 23.
TDP leader also held an emergency meeting in Hyderabad where they also had a teleconference with Chandra Babu Naidu. Meanwhile, Chief Minister K Rossiah had spoken to Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan to permit the ministers to visit the site.
