The world no. 1 one day cricket team Australia played to its name in the 1st ODI of the seven match series against England by slaying visitors by 6 wickets and 5 balls to spare while chasing not less than a mammoth total of 295.

The much deserved win for the Kangaroos came through the bat of Shane Watson who played a fantastic inning of 161 not out. It was one of the best one-day innings in recent memory. It was almost a chanceless knock, perfectly-paced and calm under pressure. He smashed a six on the very first ball of the 50th over bowled by Shahzad.

Earlier today, England were aggressive with bat after winning the toss but couldn’t use the last two balls of their innings. Andrew Strauss and Kevin Pietersen had earlier led the way as England were bowled out for 294 two balls short of using their full allocation.
Strauss struck 63 and Pietersen 78 – his first one-day half-century for more than two years – but a late collapse denied the tourists a total in excess of 300. Davies too played a fast inning and added 42 runs in 35 balls.

The counterattack by Australia was strong enough right from the beginning of their inning as they kept their wickets intact. The Queensland-born right-hander’s 150-ball contribution featured 12 fours and three sixes and he received given good support from Brad Haddin (39) during an opening stand of 110 – and then Michael Clarke (36), Mike Hussey (21) and Cameron White (25no) as the run chase got tight.

Shane Watson received the Man of the Match award for his splendid performance.
