Indian doctor Mohammad Haneef, who had been working in Queensland was arrested and prosecuted on the basis of terror suspect, has won the case of being paid compensation. The Australian jury ordered government to pay the compensation to the doctor.
As per report of sources, Mohammad Haneef was detained for several weeks for having alleged terror links over a foiled attack on London and Glasgow; afterward his working visa was cancelled and he was exiled from Australia.
Speaking to the media persons General Robert McClelland, an Australian attorney said that he hoped that a confidential compensation would bring Mr Haneef and his family closer. He further added that the investigation result into Mr Haneef’s matter clearly projected that he was wrongly dealt and detained for nothing when John Howard’s government was in power.
Mr McClelland further said that the government would adopt the recommendations made in the Haneef case so further mistakes could be avoided.
Rod Hodgson, Mr Haneef’s lawyer, said that the compensation was considerable.
Mr Haneef is presently working in UAE as a doctor.
In a press conference (last week), he said that a long repetitious errors by Australian government and police sullied his reputation and nearly ruined his career. He further described that his wrongful arrest and detention was a traumatic experience for him and his family.
He further added that the event converted his easygoing life into a nightmare and affected almost every areas of his life.
