It was miserable moment for both Chelsea and Fernando Torres who made his debut in a fashion that led down his fans expectation against his former club Liverpool as the champion Blues lost to Liverpool by 1-0.
Torres could manage only two meaningful shots before being substituted in the 65th minute at Stamford Bridge. It was within 4 minutes of Torres leaving that Raul Meireles scored his fourth goal in five games to give Liverpool its second victory against Chelsea this season and its fourth straight league win without giving up a goal.
Though Chelsea became the highest paying club by signing Torres last week for nearly 80 million dollar, they definitely went in dilemma and were led down by the ace player performance in the miserable match.
The victory lifted Liverpool into sixth place with 38 points, six behind Chelsea and Tottenham. Manchester United tops the standings with 54 points, four ahead of Arsenal, with Manchester City a point further back.
Chelsea also gave a debut to Brazilian defender David Luiz in the second half as the defending league champion tried to avert its seventh loss of the season.
While speaking to media, Carragher told Sky Sports that Fernando being the best strikers in the world will prove for Chelsea but he was not with them. He also said that they have got to focus on their team and concentrate on their own jobs and that is what they did.
In yesterday’s other game, Birmingham beat West Ham 1-0 to move out of the three-team relegation positions and leave the Hammers in last place.
