Oct 7 (FLS): Nearly a score of English and Australian swimmers in the Commonwealth Games village have reported problem with their stomach and withdrawn from the event after they were uncomfortable with their stomach. Since the problem has been reported in mass, the English officials have asked for reassurances in the quality of the water in the swimming pool.
As per report of their team doctors, nearly 10 competitors of England have an upset stomach while Australia has reported at least six sick swimmers, including Andrew Lauterstein, who pulled out of the 50m butterfly on Wednesday.
The matter has been taken seriously by the Games boss Mike Fennell who said that the officials would investigate the matter urgently and conduct tests on both the main pool and the warm-up pool at the Dr. S P Mukherjee aquatic complex.
He further said that he would not speculate before any probe. Further he added that if there was something unsafe then the swimmers can’t swim in that water and this was the matter to be dealt with emergency.
Australian chef de mission Steve Moneghetti was concerned by the number of swimmers falling sick.
Concerning the swimmers, Searle said: “We will look at that, but it’s really a matter for the organising committee.”
However, Dave Richards, a spokesperson for the England swimming team said that the reports of the sickness had been widely exaggerated and none of the swimmer had missed a competition at all.
Well, the probe is likely to take place today so that there is no hindrance in the swimming event that will continue for three more days.
