Millions of cricket fans in India were left disappointed, as Dhoni’s boys failed to live up to the expectations and lost to a rejuvenated Pakistani side by 54 runs. The victory target of 303 proved too big for the Indian batsmen, after Sachin Tendulkar’s early departure. Other batsmen were not competent enough to handle the pressure in the absence of injured Sehwag and Yuvraj.
Gambhir, Dravid and Raina batted superbly, but that was not enough to win this high voltage contest between the subcontinent rivals. Chasing a victory target of 303, India lost Tendulkar early, when he was deceived by a fine delivery from Mohammad Aamer. Aamer, who had been eyeing this wicket, was ecstatic and full of joy.
After Sachin’s departure, Gambhir and Dravid added 67 runs for the second wicket. There was a mix-up in the middle, which ended Gambhir’s superb innings on a sad note. Gambhir made 57 off 46 balls.
Young Virat Kohli did not last for long and Dhoni too disappointed the fans. However, Raina and Dravid revived the Indian hopes with a 72-run partnership for the 5th wicket. Saeed Ajmal took Raina’s wicket and Yusuf Pathan became the second victim of Mohammad Aamer. Raina made 46 off 41 balls. Rahul Dravid fought hard, but he finally fell at 76.
With Rahul Dravid’s departure, the result of the match became a mere formality and India bowled out for 248 in 44.5 overs. For Pakistan, Aamer, Rana Naved, Saeed Ajmal and Afridi took 2 wickets each. Shoaib Malik was declared “Man of the Match”.
It was the first match between India and Pakistan after 26/11 and Indian fans had high expectations from their team, but they failed.
India now need to beat both West Indies and Australia to keep its semifinal hopes alive. Pakistan is on a better position with two wins from two matches. They had earlier beaten West Indies in their first match. If India lose to Australia on Monday, they will be out of the competition.
