The much awaited movie of the year, Dhobi Ghat, has finally hit the silver screen today all across the globe and has definitely come up to expectation of the fans, viewers and critics. Dhobi Ghat has already got good reviews from the critics. However, it will be hard to say that whether the movie belong to a refreshing genre as it uses real looking plot situations and authentic visuals to tell the tale of the 4 people whose lives are related to each other.
Dhobi Ghat has two heroes Tushar Kanti Ray, the cinematographer and Gustavo Santaolalla, who provides the background score which adds to flavour of the movie.
When we talk about the script, the Director Kiran Rao’s script moves at a snail pace thus giving audience ample time to get into every characters minutely.
Characters are a brooding artist Arun (Aamir Khan), a dhobi Munna (Prateik Babbar) who harbours dreams of becoming an actor, and a high-flying wealthy investment banker Shai who’s fascinated by Mumbai and romances it with her camera. Plus, a sweet-sounding young homely Muslim woman (Kriti Malhotra) seen and heard on videotape.
In fact, the movie is kind of slow and layman may find difficulty in getting it perfectly. It is not a kind of movie where you walk in anticipating regular entertainment, it is about Mumbai, the city which is crowded but has enough place for all its immigrants, keeps all the secret of its inhabitant and becomes the Mumbai Diaries.
In short, Dhobi Ghat is a middling debut, watchable due to its nuances but simply not interesting enough to recommend. Yet Rao seems assured of her craft, and worth looking out for in the future.
Dhobi Ghat Movie Rating: 3 out of 5
