Violence escalates in Egypt as President Hosni Mubarak’s loyalists attacked pro-democracy protesters in Tahrir square on Thursday as per report of the sources.
At least three people have been reported to be dead as bursts of heavy gunfire rained into Cairo’s Tahrir square on the crowds trying to hold the site after a dramatic assault hours earlier by supporters of President Hosni Mubarak, according to a protest organiser.
The gunfire began in the wee hours of Thursday morning at around 4:00 am and continued for more than two hours.
Pro-democracy protest organiser, Mustafa el-Naggar, who’s in Tahrir Square, said the gunfire came from at least three locations in the distance. He said the Egyptian military entered the square with tank squads to try to keep some order, but did not intervene.
Earlier on Wednesday, supporters of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak charged into the square on horseback and camels while others rained firebombs from rooftops in what appeared to be a planned assault against protesters calling for an end to his near-30-year-rule.
Protesters from both sides fought pitched battles in Tahrir Square, the epicentre of ongoing demonstrations against Hosni Mubarak, which entered their tenth day on Thursday.
Egypt’s newly appointed vice president, Omar Suleiman, Wednesday urged all demonstrators to respect the curfew and go home, saying his dialogue with political forces depends on an end to street protests.
However, things are getting worse with time as the protesters have called for widespread demonstrations on Friday to press for the embattled president’s departure.
