India is no longer falling behind in the race of science and technology. Recently, in this week a (on Sunday) project regarding a genetic garden has been proposed by the Union Environment and Forests Minister Jairam Ramesh.
As per report of sources, Mr Jairam Ramesh has launched a project to create a genetic garden of halophytes and this is the first kind of its type. The report said that Vedanaraym in Nagapattinam district was the decided site.
It has been reported that the MSSRF and Society for Integrated Coastal Management had taken the responsibility to complete the project. The report further added that the garden would initially house for 45 different species, found along the coast including Andaman and Nicobar Island.
The primary ambition behind this project is to explore the commercial exploitation of halophytes, or saline resistant species of plants, which would help coastal dweller in earning their livelihood.
While informing media regarding the proposed plan Mr Jairam said that Rs 10 crore would be spent in first two years for the project. He further added that creation of bio-shield by the mangrove a forestation for 10 KM shoreline was also a part of project.
While describing the project as exclusive he said that it was a step toward eco-conservation and the project create scope of ecotourism.
Speaking to the media persons V Selvam, the head researcher of the project said that they would also do an exploratory survey to find out the halophytes.
