In a major development in the Gujarat riots case of 2002, Narendra Singh Modi government today issued a show cause notice to the IPS officer who submitted a compact disc to the Nanavati Commission containing the record of phone calls made by political leaders and police officers to the various probe panels inquiring into the 2002 Godhra riots.
As per report of the sources, in-charge DGP of Gujarat, Chitranjan Singh told that a show- cause notice has been issued by the Gujarat government to Mr. Sharma through him. He further told that the government had granted 15-day time to Sharma to reply to the notice.
It was also told that the show-cause notice was issued by the government as Mr. Sharma handed over the telephone records concerning the 2002 riots to inquiry panels without obtaining due permission from the government.
While speaking to media, Mr. Sharma confirmed that he received a show-cause notice and he was yet to study the notice and planned to give response to the notice only after consulting legal experts.
The notice asks Mr. Sharma why he should not be charge-sheeted for handing over the telephone records concerning the 2002 riots without the prior permission of government.
Sharma was the Bhavnagar police chief during the time of riots but was shunted out to Ahmadabad control room after he made attempts to control mobs.
Though the Modi government had doubted the authenticity of his CD, the High court had held it as valid evidence.
