Finally on Monday, CBI succeeded in catching the absconder Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav-former Bihar’s MP in Gurgaon who was sentenced to life for the murder of CPI-M MLA Ajit Kumar in 1998.

It was after two weeks that Yadav was caught since the apex court had rejected his bail plea. However, the absconder Yadav had surprised the Supreme Court by neither surrendering nor getting into the custody after the rejection of the bail application by the court on May 3.

On seeing the negative response of the accused Yadav, the bench remarked that they had carefully gone through the review petition and the connected papers as also the application for exemption from surrendering. It further said that the bench did not find any merit therein and they were dismissed accordingly.

Immediately after rejecting the bail plea of Yadav the court had directed CBI and the Bihar state police to execute the order of court forthwith and send a compliance report to the apex court within four weeks.

Finally, it took almost two weeks for CBI to get the hold of Pappu Yadav in Gurgaon. Earlier in 1999, CBI was brought into the case on the recommendation of Bihar government to get to the bottom of the case.

Yadav has been sentenced life imprisonment by the court for the murder of CPI-M MLA Ajit Sarkar along with his driver Harendra Sharma and party worker Ashfaqur Rehman on the feud between them over issues relating to the farm labourers.

The trial in this case is continuing since 2002 and since then 61 witnesses were presented by the prosecution.
