On the second day (Tuesday) of the 98th Indian Science Congress at Kattankulathur, Dr V K Saraswat, Director of DRDO and Defence Research and Development Department Secretary, announced to establish a research and innovation centre in the Research Park of Indian Institute of Technology Madras.
As per report of source, Dr Saraswat informed that the proposed centre would focus on material manufacturing, aerospace technology, software development and nanotechnology.
While describing the strategy he said that there would be a free flow of scientists, academicians and students in this project. He further added that the scientists from DRDO would work in IIT as assistant professors and professors and students from IIT would work as scientists in the DRDO established centre.
It has been reported that a contract had been signed between DRDO and IITM regarding the project. The report further said that one floor of the Research Park dad been decided to use for establishing the research and innovation centre and the project expectedly would be completed by August/September 2011.
Dr Saraswat said in his statement that some of collaborative research programme could not go continuously and DRDO wanted continuity this time.
While replying a question about expected initial revenue Dr Saraswat said that according to his expectation Rs 60 to Rs 70 crore could be earned annually. He further added that however, the success laid on the ability and strategy of DRDO to market its products in a market ‘which was going to be globally competitive’.
