Today is 2nd October and the 142nd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. On this day, hundreds of people pay tribute to the Father of the Nation in Rajghat, New Delhi, with school students singing devotional songs and showering flowers to the Mahatma’s memorial.

The Rajghat has been wonderfully decorated and people coming to pay tribute to the great soul can hear Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram, one of the favorite songs of the Mahatma, playing in the background.

President Pratibha Patil, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, United Progressive Alliance chairperson and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, US Ambassador Timothy Roemer, Bharatiya Janata Party senior leader L.K. Advani and many other political leaders also visited Rajghat to pay tributes to the Mahatma.

People all across the country are also celebrating this day by exchanging Gandhi Jayanti quotes and greetings through sms.

The day also marked as the International Day of Non-Violence around the world.
