India under immense pressure to accept legally binding pact at Cancun

India is facing an immense pressure to give a positive response to the “legally binding pact” on climate change at the climate change summit Cancun. The legally binding pact is consistently being supported by several developed nations, and countries within G77 including African nations.

However, On contrary, United States, India and China are not favouring the legally binding pact and not willing to accept it.
Speaking to the media persons, Mr Jairam Ramesh, Environment Minister said that there was a concentrated move by a group of develops countries by using developing countries to put peer pressure on India and China to constrain them to accept the legally binding agreement.

He further said that small island nations in the vicinity like Bangladesh, Maldives, Bhutan and Nepal were supporting and pushing hardest, as they were more vulnerable to the consequence of climate change.

While talking about the split strategy of BASIC group he said that Brazil and south Africa were united supporting the legally binding treaty, whereas India and China were against the treaty.

It has been reported that, at the environmental summit, Mr Jairam Ramesh has implicitly indicated that India would not accept the legally binding agreement until three things were cleared- the contents of legally binding, the penalty of non-compliance and the system of monitoring.

At the summit Indian delegates mentioned that New Delhi’s bid to cut the carbon emission could be considered but they were not quite ready to accept the legally binding treaty.
