Madurai Bomb Blast ( Tamil Nadu Railway Station): A powerful bomb blast in a railway station in South Tamil Nadu today left 2 dead and injuring 8 others.

The explosion went off soon after the ‘Mayiladuthurai-Tirunelveli’ Passenger train chugged into the first platform of the Sholavandan Railway station, 20 km from Madurai, around 6-05 pm, Police and Railway sources told Deccan Herald over telephone.

The bomb disposal squad rushed to the spot and began investigations, while Police reinforcements have also been moved to Sholavandan. The asbestos roofing of the platform was shattered in parts and one heavy piece fell on some persons, injuring them, sources said. The blast occurred near the Station Master’s room, but fortunately no damage was done to the passenger train that has a seating capacity for some 1,000 passengers, sources said.

Luckily, many of the passengers would have got down at the earlier junction of Dindigul and ‘Kodai Road’ station, sources pointed out, adding, there was no damage to any of the compartments of the Passenger train. One of the dead persons, identified as Paramasivam (50 years), was killed on the spot, while the head of the other deceased was chopped off under the impact of the blast.

The identity of the second deceased is yet to be ascertained but his head could have been “crushed” by the asbestos sheet that came crashing down, sources said. Police also suspect that the victim who lost his head could have carried the bomb and hurled it. The injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals, even as the train was detained at Sholavandan for over two hours.
