The Sri Lankan skipper became the world’s legendary figure after he took the wicket of Pragyan Ojha in first test match played at Galle. The spin wizard completed his 800th wicket in his last match and stumped every criticism that had come in past few matches. In the first inning he took five wickets of key Indian batsmen like sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj (52), skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (33) and tail enders Pragyan Ojha and Abhimanyu Mithun setting a milestone again by taking most number of 5 wickets in a match and bundled out India for 276 runs only. The second inning also went in his favor and he proved himself impeccable.
His stupendous performance like the present one has been consistent over almost a decade. Moreover, Galle has been Muralitharan’s favorite ground where he stunned batsmen with his ‘Doosras’. On this ground he has an incredible average of 18 where he has taken 103 wickets in 14 matches.
Muralitharan made his Test debut in 1992 against Australia in Colombo and since then he has taken 22, 10 wicket hauls. He has taken five wickets in a Test innings on a record 67 occasions.
Muralitharan has a sparkling 18 year career where he astonished players with his class. However, initially he had been many times marred in controversy over his bowling action but was finally tested by International Cricket Council and found to have a clear bowling action. His elbow deformity since birth helped him to have bent arm action by which he could provide considerable turn and bounce even on the deadest pitch.
‘Murali is an energetic and tricky bowler and he can still defer his decision to quit. World want to see his record mark climbing. 800 is not a full stop, he can touch 900 and may be 1000! Nothing is impossible!!!’ said one of his fans.
Murali having an awesome career took 515 wickets in one –day Internationals and 8oo wickets in test matches.
