Innovations are not done only at reputed research centres or reputed colleges like IITs and NITs, as a team of 54 students from SRM University has designed a nano-satellite under the supervision of India Space Research Organization (ISRO).
As per report of sources, a group of 54 students has been working on the project ‘SRMSAT’ since 2008 to develop a nano-satellite. The report further added that the weight of satellite was only 10 Kg and it was being develop to monitor greenhouse gases.
Reportedly, the estimated cost of project is 1 crore. The satellite will monitor the greenhouse gases especially carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Mr M Loganathan, former ISRO scientist who is guiding the team, said that the satellite was scheduled to launch in April 2011 with the Megatropics G satellite of ISRO. He further added that they had signed a document of understanding with the National Space Agency regarding project.
While praising the zeal of the team he said that that students were really very enthusiastic and they would work on the project after their classes. He further added that the students kept working till midnight since 4 pm (after class) and the satellite was the result of their endeavour.
Sarwesh Narayan, a team member of the project, said that initially it was pretty difficult to communicate technically as members were from different-different disciplines of engineering.
Reportedly, ISRO has informed that the satellite had to be tested before the launch.
