Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh once again got hit by the naxals on Wednesday when Maoists attacked the Search party of the state police in a thickly forested area of Gumiapal, about 420 km south of Raipur.
The encounter between the police and the Maoists began at around 11:00 am and continued for 3 to4 hours with on and off firing. Due to heavy rainfall in the area the attack was difficult to handle as reported by one of the police official. Moreover, the authorities were not able to contact the police due to heavy rains as a result the causalities are feared.
As per the latest information, Police did not find any casualties from both the Maoists and police side but the search operation is still on. Some sources revealed earlier that around 70 police personnel went missing amidst the major gun battle between the police and Maoists.
Presently, the police forces have taken safe position and additional CRPF has been rushed to the area to deal with the gunners.
“The force is safe and on its way back,” said IG (Bastar) T J Longkumer.
Earlier today, when police was hinted the presence of a unit headed by Communist Party of India –Maoist (CPI-M) commander Ganesh Uike in Gumiapal forests , a strong contingent of District Force (DF) and Koya commandos, a special trained force had gone into the forests around 11:00am.
It’s not the first time that Dantewada has been ravaged by the Maoists. Earlier, on April 6, Naxals attacked the patrolling party, killing 75 CRPF personnel and looted their weapons. India regards Maoist rebels as its gravest internal security threat.
