‘Every sixth man is an Indian’ has become a little old but its’ really astonishing that nearly half of the H-1B visa holders are from India. According to a US report most of these people, having H-1B visa, have been mostly hired for science and technology related position.
As per report of sources, a US government agency, Government Accountability Office (GAO), has reported that between 2000 and 2009, 46.9 percent of total visa approved H-1B visa holders had India as their native country.
The report further added that between the fiscal year 2000 and fiscal year 2009, the most of the approved H-1B workers were from Asia. While substantiating the information the report added that over the last decade, India, China, Canada and Philippines were the four countries at the top whose natives were granted H-1B visa (64% out of total visa) and out of these four countries India was at the top with 46.9%.
The report said that using public employers they learnt that at least 10 of the top 85 H-1B hiring employers in fiscal year 2009 participated in the staffing arrangements, of which 6 had headquarters in India.
While describing the expected governments’ step the report added that in order to maintain a balance of the protection for US workers the Congress may wish to consider reviewing the advantages and limitations of the key programme provisions and making appropriate changes as per requirement.
