Despite of appointment of Omar Suleiman as Egypt’s Vice President, the situation in Egypt has not improved as his appointment did very little to quell the unrest.
Earlier today, millions of people gathered together and participated in the rally which is being called as the largest rally in the history of Arab nation country. The Protests roared in unison for President Hosni Mubarak and his government to quit.
Sources have reported that more than 200,000 Egyptians crowded into Tahrir Square in central Cairo and 20,000 marched in Suez with reports of protests in other cities such as Alexandria.
The crowd was even chanting –“Mubarak go away to Saudi or Bahrain, We don’t want you “
Omar Suleiman, who was earlier the director of the Egyptian General Intelligence Services (EGIS) since 1993, Suleiman has been in charge of some of Egypt’s most sensitive foreign policy issues, including the Palestinian-Israeli peace process.
Late on Monday, Suleiman went on TV to announce that he had been ordered by Mubarak to tackle “constitutional and legislative reforms” and, crucially, to include opposition parties in the process.
Suleiman figures prominently in the US diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks last year. In a meeting with a US military delegation in April 2009 he explained that “his over-arching regional goal was combating radicalism, especially in Gaza, Iran, and Sudan”.
But while he may be liked and trusted abroad, many in Egypt consider Suleiman part of Mubarak’s inner circle, and as such a pillar of a corrupt regime.
