Padma Awards 2011: A list of 128 awardees of Padma awards declared

Just a day before the occasion of Republic day of the country, the Government has released the list of 128 Padma awardees who will be felicitated tomorrow.

The list includes the high profile personalities like former national security advisor Brajesh Mishra, Wipro chief Azim Premji,Montek Singh Ahluwalia, culture czarina Kapila Vatsyayan and nonagenarian photographer Homai Vyarawalla are few who head the list.

Hindi film veterans Shashi Kapoor, Waheda Rehman, music composer Khayyam and playback singer SP Balasubramanyam were named among the Padma Bhushan awardees. Tabasum Hashmi Khan alias Tabu and Kajol were chosen in the Padma Shri category.

Other personalities chosen for the Padma Vibhushan includes jurist K Parasaran, art historian Kapila Vatsayan, India’s first woman photographer Homai Vyarawalla, Malayalam writer ONV Kurup and Oriya literary personality Sitakant Mohapatra, late Gandhian LC Jain, former governor AR Kidwai, chairperson of 13th Finance Commission Vijay Kelkar, distinguished materials scientist P Rama Rao.

In the category of sports, Padma Shree award has been bagged by cricketer VVS Laxman, weightlifter Kunjarani Devi, wrestler Sushil Kumar, ace shooter Gangan Narang and discus thrower Krishna Poonia.

The list has 128 names – 13 Padma Vibhushans, 31 Padma Bhushans and 84 Padma Shri awards. There are 31 women in the list.

However, till now the government has not unveiled its plan on the honour of any personality with Bharat Ratna which is country’s highest Civilian award and it was last given to Bhimsen Joshi in 2008. Since then no one has claimed this prestigious award.

  Why government is announcing padma awards to film actors like kajol and tabu. Instead then can give to some eminent personalities in science and technology.

  Padma awards have eluded yesterday years superstar Sridevi yet again. I am yet to understand is Sridevi,s contribution to Indian cinema any less then other awardees so far like Tabu, Kajol, Rekha, Madhuri, Saif, Akshay Kumar, Aishwarya Rai. Is she less of a national treasure then any of them. If anything her contribution to Indian cinema in general including South and Mumbai film industry is far too superior then any of these.

  Very happy about the padma awards. I wish Mangalampalli balamurali krishna ji gets a Bharat ratna for his services in the field of music. He’s a legend and deserves the award!!!!!!!!!! His voice is as youthful even in his 80′s…

  I am aghast to see the choice of padma awardees. Even more bigger awards like Bharat ratna to so many not very extra ordinary fellows like Mr kalam who knows how to talk big without doing anything in reality. For his achievements pl.his missiles launched from Chandipur and falls at Chandipur. He was only president whose decision in mid night to desolve Bihar assembly is declared unconstitutional by honourabe SC.His whoe rise and celebrity status is becuase of proximity to few big fellows who were all in all of ISRO and DRDO. He has talked alot and repeat same story of his teacher and bird like rehoteric and trivial fashion sentences reveals his depth. his Vision and mission is famous but missile and bombs are only in air.
  While going to US he was frisked but at time he has not protested but after return he made it to known to the media. had he objected while going then he might have missed that one and half months tour to US and UK.
  We have conferred him Bharat Ratna and on that very yardstick all the DRDO and ISRO, BARC Fellows should be given double Bharatrtana.
  In my view it should be given to exceptionally and rarest of the rare contributors. Like Bapu, Chandrashekhar Ajad, neta Ji, Nobel lauriate venkat, Sir Raman, Sir Visveraya. All Film wallas, Singers, dancers are to be kept away from any awards. There biggest award is people’s appreciation.

  Republic Day is an occasion for everyone of us to feel proud of who we are as Indians and what we have achieved as a nation.

  This Republic Day is going to be special for Orchidians.

  It is with great delight that I wish to share with you that the PADMA SHRI award is being conferred by the Government of India on our Chairman and Managing Director, Mr K. Raghavendra Rao for his unique contribution to industry.

  This is an occasion for us to walk tall with him and feel proud of who we are as an organization; an occasion for us to reminisce about good time, celebrate our success. This indeed is an exciting milestone for him and for Orchid; and an achievement that categorically says ‘he is unstoppable’.

  Bollywood actress Kajol is not at all eligible for a appreciation like Padma award. It seems like a film fare award. What does the evaluation committee found extra ordinary (or) outstanding performance bounded in Kajol’s film career.

  They did it again. I really do not understand as to how…how they miss out SRIDEVI…how? Even non Sridevi fans agree that Sridevi deserves it. She has been a trend setter, only actress who ruled all the major film industries of India including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu.

  So is Sridevi’s contribution to the Film IndstrieS of India any less than Saif Ali Khan, Kajol, Madhuri, Tabu, Irrfan?

  Its a SIN not to give Padma to Sridevi. Extremely sad and disturbing.

  Sridevi deserved it much much earlier than these juniors….I hope and wish now when all her juniors and less deserving actors have got padmshri then govt should cover its mistake
  by awarding her with Padma Vibhushan, that will be the only
  dedication to this legend. I think sridevi should refuse to accept padmshri if she gets it too late now….but I dont have any idea that one can refuse such govt awards or not……
