Shocked by disastrous flood, Pakistan celebrated its 64th independence in very simple manner. The disastrous flood hit the Northern Province and slowly descended towards south engulfing Punjab and Sindh provinces. The flood has been marked the worst of its kind in this decade affecting around 20 million lives.

The 64th Independence Day did not show a little pomp and splendour that used to be there earlier at this occasion. Neither colourful firework celebrations were seen, nor the cultural and music show which was followed by the army parades.

However, the flag was hoisted by Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani in the morning. All the events that used to be held in the presidency were cancelled and special prayer session in mosque was organized to pray for bringing mercy of God in the natural calamity struck area and for the betterment of the affected people over there.

President Asif Ali Zardari, whose controversial Europe trip during the Pakistan’s misery aftermath flood, spent the Independence Day by taking the look of the flood stricken areas of Khyber Paktunkhwa and Punjab provinces.

He saluted the courage shown by the flood victims and promised to help them with every possible means to alleviate their existing condition while addressing on the eve of Independence Day.

Survivors of the devastating flood are facing pathetic situation as there is shortage of food, drinking water, medicine and shelter. The people are living in muddy camps and overcrowded government schools. To improve their situation and rebuild these affected parts Pakistan needs about billions and UN has appealed to help Pakistan to come out of its miseries.
