Phas Gaye Re Obama Review and Rating by Uttam N Kumar

Written and Directed by Subhash Kapoor, Phas Gaye Re Obama is a movie about an NRI millionaire who had to come to India in search of money after getting bankrupt due to the global recession. How he find the money he needed, whom he got mixed up with, that’s all the story is about. And yes, if you like “Khosla Ka Ghosla” type of movies, you will love this one.

Quick Plot (Spolier Alert!)

Due to the Global Recession, NRI Millionaire OM Shashtri (Om Uncle or “Om Mama” played by Rajat Kapoor) gets bankrupt and he is asked to vacate his house or pay the mortgaged amount of $100000 within 30 days. After much thought, he decides to comeback to India to sell his old house left to him by his father. But when he gets back to India, he is seen as a “gold mine” by different groups of local gangsters who kidnaps him in the thought of getting millions of dollars. What happens next is a combination of great comedy, superb story plot and an awesome happy ending.

The Bad Parts

Not so much to write here. Putting aside the minor flaws here and there that can be ignored, the movie as a whole is a complete comedy package. If at all I have to point something out, then maybe I would say that the “look” portrayed by Neha Dhupia could have been made better, making it look like a real gangster. She was too beautiful for a gangster of that genre!

The Good Parts

This low budget movie with not so much promotions and marketing is sure one of the must-watch movies of 2010. As I said, if you like “Khosla Ka Ghosla” type of movies, you will surely love this one. It does not have any of those “desperate” and “exaggerated” comedy dialogues and acting that we normally find in movies like “Golmaal Returns”, “Partner”, etc. And yet the movie will make you laugh with the time-to-time blunt dialogues and serious acting. Add to that the plot of the movie and the “very clever” twist that comes at the ending part. The movie also has no item numbers or any of those “masala” in it and yet the movie is a full family entertainer.
