PM, Ministers condoles K. Karunakaran death

Former Chief Minister of Kerala and veteran congress leader passed away today on 23rd December at a private hospital in Thiruvananthpuram. The 92 year old former minister died due to prolonged illness at around 5.30 pm on Thursday. PM Manmohan Singh described him as a true patriot and condoled his death. Mr. Manmohan Singh also said that Karunakaran will be long remembered for his love for the people and his work and wisdom.

As per report of the sources, Karunakaran was admitted to the hospital with severe breathing problem and fever on December 10. However, the condition of Karunakaran turned critical yesterday as doctors recommended to put on ventilator support in the hospital.

Sources have also reported that a week ago he came back from a near-death situation, and then defied medical logic by getting himself off the ventilator.

His death definitely means the end of era for a man who had been perhaps the most visible political icon of Kerala in the second half of the 20th century. Karunakaran, who also served as Union Industry Minister for a brief one year in 1995, was considered as one of the architect of coalition politics in the country.

People from all walks of life including ministers, cultural leaders, political personalities and film actors paid rich tributes to former Chief Minister.

Sources have also reported that Chief Minister V.S. Achutanandan, state Cultural Affairs Minister M.A.Baby, Port Minister V.Surendran Pillai, former Member of Parliament V.S. Sivakumar, Malankara Metrapolita Major Archbishop Mor Basalious Climmis and director Madhupal went to the hospital to pay homage to the veteran leader and to convey their condolence to the bereaved family members.

Relatives of minister informed media that the body would be taken to his native place Thrissur as a procession and the cremation would take place on December 25.
