The government’s decision to regularize licences of the companies which failed to meet the deadline set for the roll-out obligation of second generation mobile telephony spectrum has been put down by a NGO which challenged government in the apex court today.
As per report of the sources, Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL) along with other civil societies and individuals filed an application seeking direction to restrain the ministry of telecom from implementing the fresh regularizing policy of second generation mobile spectrum licences of such companies by imposing penalty.
The NGO further said that the spectrum scam monitoring provided the opportunity for the judiciary to lay down guidelines on licence allotments relating to exploitation of natural resources and minimise corruption.
The joint petition filed by them alleged that the allocations made by the department of telecom (DoT) during the tenure of former telecom minister A Raja, were marred by “multiple illegalities, corruption and favouritism” and the government is trying to protect them by charging a small penalty.
Sources have reported that other petitioners in this case are former chief election commissioner JM Lyngdoh, TS Krishnamurthy and N Gopalaswami along with former central vigilance commissioner P Shankar.
Referring to CAG report, the petitioners alleged that 85 licensees out of 122 issued to 13 companies have been found to the ineligible for grant of license and 2G spectrums and have acquired it through fraudulent means.
It seems difficult for government to come out of here. Let’s see how govt. Face it.
