The race to provide the cheapest handset is on as always with telecom companies targeting to launch handsets that will cost less than Rs 1,000. Now it is the leading telecom company, Vodafone, which is all set to launch its mobile phone worth Rs 700 ($16). This range of mobile phones will target the rural population of the country. Even though other top telecom providers are trying to make their mark, this is the first time any company has gone to the extent of lowering their prices as low as Rs. 700.
Initially this trend was kicked off by Nokia launching a handset worth Rs. 1,300, followed by Vodafone with a mobile phone priced at Rs. 1,200. Besides India, even the British operators are also set to unveil a range of ultra cheap handsets starting below $16 in the developing countries such as Egypt, Turkey and Africa.
The handset which is priced at Rs. 700 will be available throughout the country and not just in rural areas. This is expected to reduce the entry budget for people who have not yet bought a handset.
