In a stampede that took place near Sabarimala temple in Kerala around 8:00 pm on Friday nearly 102 people have been reported dead and more than 100 are injured. As per report of the sources, the stampede occurred when the pilgrims were returning after witnessing the ‘Makarajyothi’ from the grassland area (Pulmedu) which is about 12 km from Sabarimala.
Officials fear that the death toll count may rise with the passage of time.
Expressing sadness over the mishap, State Education Minister M.A Baby said that a jeep broke down ran into the crowd when some people pushing it lost control of the vehicle, which might have triggered the stampede.
Baby further told that the place where stampede took place lies in the remote part where proper communication facilities are not available which delayed the rescue operation. However, a huge rescue operation has been launched by the state, she further said.
Most of the bodies and the injured have been brought to the Kumily government hospital.
State finance minister Thomas Isaac reached the hospital in the morning and said that the state government will meet the expenses for treating the injured even if they have been admitted to private hospitals in Idukki and Kottayam districts.
The two-month long pilgrimage which began in mid-November was, by and large, incident-free till last night.
Defence Minister A.K. Antony said this is one of the worst tragedies the country has seen. ‘I have directed the defence (forces) to see that all the help be provided.’
