Today (15th of January), solar eclipse will be visible in India. And many scientists and experts have suggested that we should not miss the solar eclipse but of course with some necessary precautions. As we know there are lots of myths and superstitions related to Solar eclipse like “not eating during the eclipse”, etc which is illogical, I just thought I will post an entry here with some important precautions.
One of the most strongest suggestion is NOT TO LOOK AT THE SUN DIRECTLY BECAUSE THE RAYS MIGHT HARM EYESIGHT.
Here are some more that we can add in the list.
(1) A pair of binoculars can be used along with a long hardboard box to obtain good projected views of the sun for safe solar viewing.
(2) By projection method, a pinhole or small opening is used to cast the image of the sun on a screen placed a half-metre or more beyond the opening.
(3) Experts also warned people to use sunglasses, colour film, black-and-white or photographic negatives or X-ray film to watch the solar eclipse.
Here are some dos and don’t during solar eclipse:
The DO’s:
You can eat during solar eclipse.
You can travel and go out during solar eclipse.
Wear 35-solar goggles while watching the solar eclipse. It cost 20-40 rs.
You can take two sheets of thick white paper and drill pinsize hole in one of the sheets. Place them one behind the other at a distance of 10 cm.
You can view a larger image of solar eclipse on the other sheet through the pin hole.
The DONT’s:
Don’t look at the sun with the naked eye.
Don’t use any type of lens to look at the sun.
Don’t use a glass plate below 14-grade. Carbon coating on these glass is not too safe.
