Sonia Gandhi is all set to get elected as the President of the Congress party for the fourth time as she has got 55 sets of nomination papers filed in her favour by her party members. The nominations are likely to be scrutinized tomorrow and results will be declared tomorrow only.
With Gandhi certain to become the President of the Congress Party for the fourth time, it will be a record breaking tenure for any party president in the last 125 years. Gandhi had assumed office as party President in 1998.
As per stats reported by the chairperson of the party’s Central Election Authority (CEA) Oscar Fernandez, till Thursday afternoon over 55 sets of nominations were filed.
Before filing nominations, a bunch of top brass of the congress party including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the chief ministers of Congress-ruled states and several union ministers visited Gandhi’s 10 Janpath residence to get her assent on the nomination papers. Rahul Gandhi even cancelled his three days visit in his Amethi constituency so as to take part in the process of filing nominations for his mother.
However, BJP has shown its resent for Gandhi’s fourth term candidature as president of the party and asked her to offer the chair of party chief to somebody outside the Gandhi family just as she had “sacrificed” the post of Prime Minister.
BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad alleged that Gandhi was the “tallest leader” of her party exercising authority without any public accountability. He also condemned Congress party by saying that as per BJP constitution any president gets only one term of three years and they had a democratic system of electing their office-bearers.
