South African celebrates Mandela Day

On sunday, thousands of South Africans celebrated the 92nd birthday of Nelson Mandela, the national hero and former President. Nelson Mandela’s birthday is recognised by the world as Nelson Mandela International Day. It also was his 12th marriage anniversary with third wife Graca Machel.

He had appealed to the people to use the day for a good cause. Many businesses and public offices mobilised their staff for 67 minutes to pay a tribute to the 67 years that Mandela had devoted to politics for a great cause.

Many people fed street children, and did many social work on the day. “Goodwill games”, were also played on this day. Mandela spent the day with his family in Johannesburg. He and his wife also visited the an orphanage in Soweto to help plant a vegetable garden.Mandela has retired from public life owing to his ill health.
