Chandigarh: In a shocking development, former Haryana DGP, SPS Rathore, who is the prime accused in 19-year-old Ruchika Girhotra molestation case, was attacked by a youth outside the Chandigarh court. Rathore was stabbed thrice in face. He was rushed to hospital for treatment.

The youth, who stabbed SPS Rathore, was identified as Utsav Sharma from Varanasi. He is studying film production in Ahmedabad. Utsav pretended as a freelance journalist and got close access to Rathore to carry out the attack. The police have detained him and questioning.

It was clear tht Utsav Sharma is not related to either Ruchika’s family or her friend Aradhana’s family. There is a public outrage over the handling of Ruchika molestation case and that could be the reason, which prompted the youth to take the law into his own hand.

The 14-year-old budding tennis player, Ruchika Girhotra, who was molested by SPS Rathore on August 12, 1990, was harassed to such an extent that she committed suicide three years later. Rathore was convicted in December 2009, but got a sentence of six months. Ironically, he was never arrested and is on bail.

Bowing to the pressure from media and public, the Centre, Haryana government and the CBI have decided to revisit the Ruchika molestation case. Fresh charges under different sections of the law have been formed against Rathore.
