Mounting pressure from the MPs of congress from Telangana forced Andhra government on Tuesday to bow before them and withdraw all the criminal cases which were filed during the agitation led for demanding separate Telangana state.
As per report of the sources, the government has decided to withdraw the pending 967 cases after a series of meetings and discussion that took place between chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and ministers and other ruling party leaders from the region.
Welcoming the decision of government, congress leader Keshav Rao called off strike which he was holding against the cases involving students who were part of Telangana agitation last year. Moreover, many MPs today called off their fast after the Andhra Pradesh government decided to withdraw all the police cases filed against students.
The MPs began their fast on Monday demanding immediate withdrawal of all the police cases filed against students during the Telangana agitations.
It was Home minister Sabita Indra Reddy who made an announcement withdrawal of cases and also told that the government will move to the court to withdraw some of the cases which were serious in nature.
Earlier, the government on Monday decided to withdraw 135 cases against 834 students but the MPs made it clear that they would not settle for anything less than withdrawal of all cases.
As per report of the sources, the situation was so serious that Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s political advisor Ahmed Patel and party general secretary M. Veerappa Moily spoke to Reddy and Srinivas over phone.
A total of 1,667 cases were filed against 8,047 people during the pro and anti-Telangana protests.
