TRAI recommends 10 digit landline numbers

As the number of telecom subscribers has escalated to cross the 750 million mark , the telecom department is in haste to devise 10 digit numbering system for the landline services as it has come under severe strain with mobile users increasing like anything and defying all estimations.

To sort out this problem, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Friday has recommended a 10 digit numbering scheme for both the mobile and landlines and this integrated numbering scheme is expected to be launched by the end of the next year.

TRAI has come forward with this recommendation that the uniform 10 digit numbering system for both the mobiles and fixed phones would make enough numbers to expand the existing services and bring the newer services for the next 30-40 years. TRAI has said that the introduction of such numbering system will revolutionize the telecom services and also facilitate the extension of number portability to fixed lines.

The earlier framed national numbering plan 2003 has already been surpassed in the year 2009 in which the number of subscribers went pass 750 million mark including the mobile users. As per statistics given by TRAI, the numbers of subscribers are likely to exceed 1 billion mark by the year 2014and this situation has brought the TRAI under pressure to install a new urgent plan that would save the system from collapsing.

The regulator also put a limit on the service providers by restraining them to not have more than three million unutilized numbers when they request for the new block of numbers to ensure efficient utilisation of the existing numbers.
